We Can See Clearly Now: Cresskill begins eyeglass donation initiative

1972…Lyricist Johnny Nash wrote to song, “I can see clearly now.” How spiritual! How esoteric! A timeless soul quencher! Alack! I had to learn the hard way.

After wearing eyeglasses for as long as I can imagine, after undergoing surgeries for a detached retina and two cataracts, after losing my appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, after being diagnosed with diabetes, I succumbed to the importance of having vision. I can see clearly now.

2023…fast forward! Why don’t we as the learning community of Cresskill do something new and exciting for those in need? Why don’t we collect old or used pairs of eyeglasses from family and friends and donate them to a worthy cause sponsored by the Lions Club International? One of the Club’s activities is to collect these vintage or broken spectacles, recycle them, and make new eyewear for the needy, giving them the sense of sight. ROARRR! I can see clearly now.

The Vision of the Lions Club is “to be a global leader in community and humanitarian service.” As local and global citizens, isn’t that what we are all about? We sponsor so many wonderful fundraisers. Why not add one more? I can see clearly now.

Cresskill Middle-High School (Mr. Orfini – C20), Merritt Memorial School (Mrs. Reiffe – Main Office), Edward H. Bryan School (Dr. Collins – Main Office), and the CSI-Tallman House (Mrs. Weber) see eye to eye on this humanitarian mission. Receptacles will be placed in each building. Once the bins are full, I’ll have our collection delivered to the local chapter of the Lions Club. I can see clearly now.

Whether you are a Cougar, a Mustang, or a Bulldog, we have always been mindful of helping our community and beyond. What better way to continue this journey than by letting others “see” the good we do. Let’s show them we care, as we truly make a difference in the “eyes” of so many people. WE CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW!
