The rivalry between red and blue Takis have been around forever. It’s the ultimate snack showdown and everyone’s picking favorites. Do they taste the same? What’s the difference? Is there even a difference? To find out, a blind taste test was conducted in order to understand; what really separates the two? Each participant closed their eyes and reached into a brown paper bag, pulling out either a red, or blue taki. Then, after having tried both flavors, they described each of them.
At first, most volunteers correctly guessed the flavor of the Takis. Mrs. Germano, a P.E teacher at Cresskill High School, explained that “The blue ones are spicier”, While Evelyn, a freshman, said, “The second one (red) was better, and the first one was almost sweet.” Interestingly enough, they both described the same Taki, just noticing different aspects of it. Emily, a student at CHS commented, explaining that the takis tasted, “kind of the same,” yet still guessing the flavors correctly.
But many participants were unaware of the kind of taki they had eaten. Simone, a freshman, said, “The second one (blue) was better, the first one had less flavor.” Yet, guessed the colors backwards. “The first one (red) was better because it wasn’t as spicy.” Maddie explains. Which was also assumed incorrectly. Other contestants were completely lost. Mr. Grill, a P.E, freshman volleyball coach, and freshman boys basketball coach, simply said, “They tasted the same, the second one (red) was a bit spicier, but I have no idea.” Another student, Annabella, added, “They tasted the same, the second one (blue) had more powder… I have no idea.” The taste test created a spark of confusion throughout students and teachers.
Overall, most contenders preferred the red takis over the blue takis for their stronger flavor and spice. The taki theory may be a placebo effect, although both are similar in flavor and spice, many struggled to tell the difference between both takis.
