The upcoming 2026 World Cup will be the largest World Cup tournament ever played, expanding from 32 teams to 48. It will be hosted across 3 nations—the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This increased qualification slots across all confederations, adding more drama in every corner of the world.
How Qualification works
Different Continents have different levels of access.
AFC (Asia) has 8 direct spots while also having a part in an intercontinental playoff.
CAF (Africa) has 9 direct and is also part of the playoffs
CONCACAF (North America) has 6 slots, 3 of which include the hosts.
CONMEBOL (South America) has 6 direct and playoffs.
OFC (Oceania) has 1 direct playoff.
UEFA (Europe) has 12 direct and 4 through their own playoffs.
Intercontinental Playoffs determine the final 2 spots after regional qualifiers finish. Only UEFA has its own playoffs: every other continent has a playoff of its own.
In regions like Asia and Europe, not all qualifying groups are finalized yet. This is because some nations are still going through their own playoffs. For example, Italy is still competing for qualification through the playoffs in Europe, while Iraq is going through the Intercontinental playoff.
Historic Firsts/Feats
Cape Verde qualified for their first-ever World Cup. This is quite remarkable because they are one of the smaller footballing nations in Africa.
South Africa hasn’t been to the World Cup since 2010, but they finished strong and topped their regional groups ahead of powerful rivals.
Nigeria, an African heavyweight with world-class stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, failed to qualify. This is a humiliation for a nation that is historically dominant and has a golden generation.
Curacao and Haiti of the CONCACAF sealed their tickets to the World Cup in a dramatic fashion, defeating favorites like Nicaragua, Honduras, and Jamaica.
Argentina and Brazil both made it through, but Brazil looked shaky and out of form. Estevao, an upcoming star for Chelsea, looked sharp. He will be someone to look for.
Norway absolutely smashed Italy 4-1, clinching the top spot and sending the 2020 European Champions into the playoffs.
Prices will not be good. It’s looking to be at least $250 per match (FOR ONE PERSON). The final will be at least $8000.
