The 2x reigning World Champ, nicknamed “Quad God,” was considered guaranteed to win gold in the Men’s Singles at the 2026 Olympics Milano Cortina. Winning gold in the team event, along with 2 impressive performances, Malinin was believed to overcome the Olympic pressure, but that was most definitely not the case. In the Men’s Single Free Skating Program, Malinin placed 15th, falling from 1st to 8th in the total competition. This was Malinin’s first time losing a competition since November of 2023, ending his 14 consecutive competition win streak.
What was supposed to be Ilia Malinin’s crowning Olympic moment quickly turned into one of the most shocking collapses in Olympic history. From his first quad axel attempt, something looked terribly off. From a move that has a base of 12.50 points, he managed to only score 1.05 points from a single axel. This mistake immediately changed the energy in the arena.
The error not only cost Malinin points, but marked the start of the pressure seemingly starting to build up. Instead of Malinin skating with his typical powerful and confident behavior, he looked tense and was rushing many of his moves. The Olympics are unlike any other competition, as the entire world is watching, creating unrealistic expectations for others. For Malinin, who had not lost since November of 2023, the pressure to deliver a stellar performance may have become overwhelming to him.
Hailey Chung, a 10th grade figure skating fan who watched the event live, said she could immediately sense something was off. Chung stated, “I watched it live, and you could just feel bad, because of the amount of pressure.” When Malinin fell from 1st to 8th, she was shocked, and stated, “I expected a flawless performance, especially after how amazing he did in the team event.” Many fans, like Hailey, were stunned by the fact that he missed a quad axel, a jump that only Malinin has landed multiple times. “I was really surprised when he missed the quad axel,” Chung stated, “He was getting overhyped the whole Olympic Games, and people kept bringing up how his parents were Olympic skaters, so in a way, I kind of expected a slight mess-up, but not one as big as a failed quad axel.”
Despite the heartbreaking result, many fans believe this moment will not define his career. “I don’t think this will define his career at all,” Chung said. “If anything, it’s going to make him more determined. You can tell he wants to come back stronger.” After the competition, fans also realized the social media activity by Malinin on TikTok, where he reposted many videos about how disappointed he was from his own results. Many of these reposts hinted at Malinin being hungrier than ever to win more competitions, using his Olympic performance as fuel and motivation. His reposts have shown his fans that he is ready to redeem himself, and use the Olympics as coal to stoke the fire.
In the end, Malinin’s performance showed the world that nothing is guaranteed. His performance has shown that every person in this world is human, regardless of their talent and skill. Under the Olympic spotlight, many performances can be changed and unexpected, just like Malinin’s. However, setbacks like this can become the turning point in a person’s career, possibly setting up a stronger comeback.
