Everyone imagines senior year a certain way, football games, senior sunrise, college acceptances, and the idea that it will be the “best year” of high school. Students always look up to seniors, assuming they have everything all figured out. But for many seniors, the reality is very different from what is expected.
For underclassmen, senior year seems almost perfect. Freshman Katie Kim said, “I think senior year is going to be a breeze but full of nostalgia and stress, I feel like it’s going to go by really fast.” Sophomore Angelina Cecere added, “I feel like senior year is going to be pretty easy but at the same time sad.” From the outside, it looks exciting, easy, and full of freedom.
Even seniors themselves once had these expectations. Thinking back to freshman year, most students imagined a vastly different sequence of events. Senior Layla Berkowitz said, “When I was a freshman, senior year seemed like such a fun experience, but there really is a lot of stress and many responsibilities.” Senior Shelley Tal added, “I expected it to be more mature but in reality you really are still kids. I expected classes to be chiller and more free.” At the time, senior year felt far away, something to look forward to rather than something to worry about.
The reality is unfortunately much more complicated. Social media highlights the best parts, acceptances, game days, senior sunrise, and big milestones, it barely shows the stress behind the scenes. The pressure of making future decisions, balancing school work, and keeping up with the expectations can make senior year overwhelming. Senior Levie Coriat shared, “I honestly didn’t think it would be this stressful, so many different factors go into senior year that no one talks about.”
The idea that senior year is “easy” doesn’t always match up with student’s experiences. Between deadlines, responsibilities and the uncertainty of what comes next, many seniors feel more pressure than ever before.
At the same time, there is another side of senior year that people don’t always talk about, the fact that everything you’ve known for the last 12 years is coming to an end. Beyond the excitement, seniors face a series of lasts. Last games, last spirit day, and last moments with the people they’ve grown up with. Senior Luke Kopczynski said, “My last basketball game was really sad, it was hard to believe that my career actually came to an end after 12 years of playing. ”
And then there’s the phrase “Enjoy it while it lasts.” It’s meant to help, but it can also make things harder. Instead of just living in the moment, students feel pressure to make every second count. Senior Sea Itzhaki says, “Everything feels like a last, I am trying to make the best out of every moment with my friends before we go our separate ways.”
Ultimately, senior year isn’t just the “best year” everyone talks about. It’s full of pressure, change, and moments that go by too fast.
