Cresskill’s football players may have ended their season a month ago, but the cheerleaders only wrapped it up this Sunday. The varsity cheer team traveled to Fair Lawn to compete in the 18th annual Cutter Classic cheer competition. Led by captains Jada Urbaez, Rayveliss Ulrick, and Einav Meir, the girls took home second place in the Intermediate Varsity All Music category.

Leading up to the competition, the girls felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety, eager to show off a routine that they have been working extremely hard for.

“We’ve been working hard all season practice new stunts to eventually show them off at competition and we did exactly that”, Urbaez says. Aspiring to follow last year’s first-place win with an equally animating performance, the cheer squad prepared for their last performance together.

The team’s hard work clearly paid off as they performed a series of stunts, formations, and tumbles to the song “Swalla” by Jason Derulo, finishing off the one minute routine with what Urbaez describes as an epic pyramid that outshone their previous performances at the football games.

Although the girls were disappointed that they came in second place behind their rival, Emerson, they were proud of their performance during this bittersweet wrap-up to their season.

“We would’ve liked to beat Emerson,” Urbaez says “but we all have good sportsmanship and it’s good to understand that no matter how hard you work, there’s always someone that’ll beat you.”
