Apple has just come out with a new major update, iOS14. This new update added a bunch of features including: phone calls come up as a banner at the top of the screen instead of taking over the entire screen, the ability to do other things on your phone while on FaceTime, pinning text messages, and much more. One of the most popular and biggest shifts is the home screen. This new update allows you to redesign your home screen using a new feature called widgets. You can now customize your home screen to match any theme of your desire.

Many students at Cresskill High School have taken advantage of this new element in the update. Conveniently hiding phone calls, as well as being able to see the FaceTime screen and home screen are just two features that make this update superior to prior ones. Sophomore Paul Yoon explained how beneficial this update is. He said, “It is more convenient because it adds a creative aspect to designing a home screen, and is easier to use.”

Although some find these new features amusing, others believe that it is unnecessary and takes a lot of effort and time to create. Sophomore, Mackenzie Wolfer described the update by saying, “In some ways it is more convenient. I can decline or hide calls easily, but seeing random pictures on my home screen can be irritating.” Wolfer continued by explaining how much time creating the home screen would take her and that it is a waste of time.

Students including Danielle Villani, Keely Morrissey, and Paul Yoon have taken the time to decorate their home screens and they are very creative. Each of their screens are unique to what they like. Villani’s is a warm fall theme, Morrissey’s is a Harry Potter theme, and Yoon’s is a tribute to his favorite football team–the Los Angeles Chargers. These students really made the most out of this update.

There seems to be many different opinions on the IOS 14 update. Some students like the new update and have taken advantage of it but others think it is pointless and a waste of time.
