Now that the leaves are beginning to darken, the nights are getting longer, and the air is starting to smell like pumpkin spice, the 2024 fall season is ready to start. And in capturing the essence of the months September through November, Cresskill’s students will be ranking top 5 halloween candies.
Based on the student survey and teacher evaluation the rank stands as…
1. Sour Patch kids
In first place, Sour Patch Kids is elected by far the most popular and delicious candy out of the five. 7 out of the 15 surveyed named Sour Patch Kids as their top sweet. 10th grader, Erin Kim states, “Gummies are better to eat than chocolate. You have to be in the mood to eat chocolate but you are always in the mood for gummies.” The diverse flavor choices of Sour Patch Kids consist of tropical, watermelon, strawberry, cola, lemonade, and so much more. They also have many exotic and unique flavors such as mystery, red, white, blue, and tricksters. Out of all the flavors, the most popular is watermelon.
2. Reese’s Peanut Butter cup
Second, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are a warm and comforting taste to the mouth. 4 out of the 15 said that Reese’s were their top choice. With the creamy peanut butter filling, they present an elevated taste compared to basic Hershey’s chocolate. Students believe that the actual peanut butter inside of the chocolate is much better than just the peanuts inside of Snickers. 10th grader Yuval Yochai explains her love for peanut butter cups by stating, “I think it is so good because when you take that first bite, you feel the peanut butter exploding in your mouth and there are so many flavors you taste at once.” Personally, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are also my favorite from this list.
3. Skittles
In third place, is Skittles, a classic candy that all kids and adults have had before. Though they are not really gummies, Skittles are loved as a chewy fruit-flavored candy. But they are placed in third as the sourness in sour patch kids provide a delicious edge to the candy. Skittles despite having different flavors, they taste almost identical to one another and lack the strong kick that many other gummies have. And due to this, only 2 out of the 15 have Skittles as their favorite. Ironically based on usatoday.com 2023 most popular Halloween candy chart, Skittles is also the 3rd most popular candy in New Jersey with 145,295 pounds of it sold.
4. Snickers
Snickers are placed fourth due to their generic taste. Snickers is a chocolate bar that is filled with caramel and peanuts. Addison Spelbrink, a 10th grader at Cresskill High School, believes that “Snickers are just like most chocolates like Twix and Milky Ways. Nothing really stands out when you eat them.” Unfortunately for our history teacher, Mr. Surgent, he was the only one who voted Snickers as his favorite out of the 15.
5. Candy Corn
Lastly, the most iconic candy for Halloween is candy corn. Candy corn is definitely a hit or miss for many, and for these select Cresskillians, they are definitely a miss. They believe that candy corn tastes heavily processed and the idea of candy corn is appealing but it is purely for marketing purposes. Unfortunately for candy-corn lovers, this sweet was placed last for every student and teacher surveyed including Mr. Surgent and Mr. Mejia.
This concludes Cresskill High School’s 2024 ranking of the top 5 Halloween candies. While this ranking may not reach your standards, at the end of the day, it is all based on personal taste and opinions. And no matter which candy is your favorite, whether it be Sour Patch Kids or candy corn, all that matters is that you are enjoying your Halloween spooky season!
