Ranking Favorite Fall Flavors
As the leaves begin to change and sweater weather rolls in, so do the flavors that remind us of everything cozy and warm. But with so many fall flavors—pumpkin, apple, maple, chai, and cinnamon—the question of what the ultimate autumn flavor arises. After interviewing teachers and students at our school, here’s the official ranking of the top five fall flavors.
- Pumpkin Spice
When you think of fall, it’s the first flavor that comes to mind, and results show that pumpkin is the reigning king of fall flavors. Its universal appeal stands strong as, for many at CHS, it stays a flavor that defines the season.
“I don’t care how basic it is—pumpkin spice is a top-tier fall flavor,” claims sophomore Dariya Grechanikov. “It’s the one thing that I look forward to all summer and by the time I finally get it, it’s all I can think of until it comes around again.”
Dariya isn’t alone in her enthusiasm for pumpkin spice. Many other students at CHS ranked this flavor as their favorite, going on to associate it with everything from pumpkin pie to the iconic PSL (pumpkin spice latte). Junior Jeewoo Park adds, “Whatever it is, if it’s pumpkin spice flavored it screams fall.”
- Apple
But pumpkin’s victory wasn’t uncontested as Apple with its crisp refreshing taste, came in at a close second. Many sophomores, including Sarah Park and Yuval Yochairanked apple as first while other students scored it as high as second or third.
“Apple reminds me of apple picking season,” says eighth grader Norah Green, “There’s nothing better than apple cider on a cold day.”
The nostalgia and connection to fall traditions that apple brings makes it a strong contender for the top spot in many students’ hearts.
- Cinnamon
Third on the list is cinnamon, a spice that often serves to compliment others but manages to shine on its own. Cinnamon lovers at CHS appreciate its versatility as whether it’s sprinkled on toast or served with a pie, the spice adds warmth and depth to any fall treat.
Ellie Green is one of the many fans of this spice, contradicting the opinion of her sister Norah. “It’s not overpowering, and when it’s done just right, cinnamon adds the perfect touch of fall,” she says, ranking it as her top flavor.
Still, cinnamon being third on the list can also be seen as controversial. “Personally, cinnamon wouldn’t even make my top five,” admits Lia Lotan, “I think it’s disgusting and overused. Why do people feel the need to put it on top of everything?”
- Maple
Maple might not get as much hype as pumpkin spice or apple, but those who love it, really love it. Sophomore Ryan Woo shared his thoughts: “Maple is such an underrated flavor. I’d choose anything drowned in maple syrup over pumpkin spice any day,” he says passionately.
“Maple is good, but it’s never going to top any of the other flavors,” argues Elaine Kim. “It’s always a hit or miss—too sweet or too bland.”
- Chai
Finally, at the bottom of the list, is chai. Despite some loyal fans like chemistry teacher Mr. Mejia who ranked chai as his top choice, most students didn’t share his enthusiasm. In fact, only 25% of students interviewed liked the flavor while the rest were left wondering what chai even was.
“I’ve never tried chai so I’m not sure what it tastes like,” explains Dylan Cardoza, who placed chai at the bottom of his ranking. He’s not alone—35% of students interviewed also claimed to have never tried chai and among those who had, many felt it didn’t live up to the hype.
Honorable Mention: Pecan
Though pecan itself isn’t distinct enough to be considered a flavor, it was frequently brought up during the interviews. And while pecan may not have claimed an official spot on the list, it’s certainly deserving of a shoutout. “Pecan pie is my favorite, especially during the fall season,” one student shares. “The sweet earthy, nutty flavor just makes me feel at home.”
But whether you’re all about the classic pumpkin spice or prefer a more underground flavor of maple or maybe even pecan, there’s no shortage of options to enjoy this season. So make sure to grab your favorite fall treat and savor it while the season lasts!
