Hair curling, what’s not to like about it? Methods of curling have been popular for centuries, being a great way to transform your way into looking voluminous and fancy, with practically no effort. It can enhance your overall appearance, making you seem more confident, put together, and ready for your day! Heatless or with heat, there are many techniques to achieve your desired look, and we are here to explore them!
Which way is better? What way is preferred? Asking around the school, the answers surprisingly varied. Out of 15 people asked, 11 admitted to liking heat better, while only 4 preached the way of heatless. Vanessa Romero (27’), explained why she is a loyal follower of heated curls. She noted and held strong on her opinion of heat being superior, strongly declaring that “Oh, heated all the way. I don’t have time to think of what I will do with my hair like 12 hours before it happens. A curling iron is much faster than me having to sit and put my hair up, and I think it looks nicer anyways. I’m more of a one and done type of person, and I just can’t see myself sitting down, putting annoying curlers in my hair, sleeping on it, and having to wake up in the morning even earlier than I already do just to do my hair. And there is always the possibility that the hair won’t dry, leading to it looking like a mess. I can’t have that.” Heated curlers seem to be providing convenience, in the form of the process taking much less time, as well as being able to do it everywhere. Not having to rely on having to bring many different pieces with you seems to be great, with just needing a singular gadget!
On the contrary, an anonymous student, a junior, backed up her reason of loving the heatless look for the reason of it being better because “I like the way the curl is much tighter when I roll it up, but it’s also way healthier for my hair. I don’t mess with heat damage.” Bringing up the fact it is just overall healthier for the hair from not having to suffer the constant need of getting heated up leading to the hair looking dead did seem to be a widely accepted and appreciated idea in the heatless curl community, with Lara Mohl (28’) adding on that ”I occasionally put the flat iron or barrel curler to my hair, but my hair always feels kinda dry after. That’s why I much prefer just doing it the old-fashioned way, without any heat. Yeah, it takes longer with me having to physically roll each section and then sleep on it which can be a little tedious, but in the end, I’d rather have my hair be healthy, even if it calls for me having to just put in a little more effort”. Heatless curl fanatics are in agreement of the process being better for the hair, not caring much about the consequence of it, the process taking more time as a whole. If this is so, why wouldn’t everyone just curl their hair like that?
While it certainly looks that opinions seem to be all curled up on the matter of which method is better, there is definitely one thing both sides of the hair community can seem to be agreeing on. No matter which method, the little action of curling your hair makes a tremendous difference to an individual, allowing them to look their best, achieved from whichever manor they want!
Method 1 – Heatless curling rod (robe curls).
This method works by first clipping the robe to the top of your hair so it won’t move. Next, wrap sections of hair around the rod, all the way down your hair until the hair is all spun up, in an up to down spiraling technique. You can start with already damp hair or spray your hair slightly with water after having put it up.
Method 2 – Heatless sponge rollers (grandma curlers).
This method works by taking 1-inch sections of hair, and rolling it up in a curler, in a direction towards or away from the head, and securing it with the provided clamp that connects to the middle spine of the sponge roller placed conveniently in the center of it! You can start with already damp hair or spray your hair slightly with water after having put it up.
Method 3 – Hair curler (barrel curler).
This method works by wrapping sections of your hair around a heated barrel, and holding it in place for a few seconds before unwinding the hair off the appliance! You can start with fresh, dried hair, or with having put on some heat protectant.
Method 4 – Hair Straightener (flat iron).
This method works by taking sections of hair and placing them between the iron, and rotating the straightener as it’s pulled down the length of the hair, creating beautiful curls! You can start with fresh, dried hair, or with having put on some heat protectant.
