As you look on your phone, you get an alert from the state, saying there is a category 3 hurricane coming your way. You start rushing to any store in sight, trying to get any supplies you can find to help you survive this kind of hurricane. When you arrive at the store, you see a parking lot full of cars, at this point you know that all the supplies you need are going out of stock. As you try to get anything you can, you notice that some people who have a big family don’t have nearly any supplies.
Florida is one of the most notorious states known for getting hit with some of the most dangerous storms. On Wednesday October 9th, a category 3 hurricane named “Milton” first hit Siesta Key in Florida. People that lived around this area knew that if they lived by water, that they needed to make sure their house didn’t get flooded. People grabbed sand bags, concert bags and anything else they could find to help them get through this storm without getting their house flooded.
According to CBS news, about 24 people died from this hurricane. Many people’s houses even became flooded. Mr. Orfini, a librarian at CHS, talked about his daughter’s interest in attending college in florida. He explained, “ We are trying to not let her go because of how dangerous these storms get.” He also explained, “Mother nature can’t control itself and we just have to take it in and hope for the best.” Some say they were lucky, where many others say they weren’t.
Hurricanes really affect people in Florida. The effects become much greater when people run out of necessary supplies. Hoarders make this problem much worse. For example, when people go to buy a case of water, other people may have 3 cases of water for themselves. Some people aren’t even lucky enough to even get one case. This goes to show just how much people struggle when these kinds of hurricanes come without notice. But as the hurricane stopped, people say they saw a beautiful sunset right after, making an unfortunate but peaceful ending to the storm.
