Gracie Abrams has been in the music industry for 5 years but it was only recently that she suddenly rose to fame. Throughout her career she has released many pieces of music such as EPs (Extended Plays) and the single “Brush Fire”. Gracie had also released an album in 2023, Good Riddance. These works have gained her some favorable recognition from the internet, especially her EP “minor”, which gave Abrams some significant fame. Olivia Rodrigo, arguably one of the most well-known pop stars of this generation, also had Abrams open her SOUR tour performances back in 2022. This tour allowed Gracie Abrams to receive even more recognition, but still, people knew her songs, but they never knew her.
However, Abrams received acknowledgment for releasing two singles from her new album The Secret of Us, “Risk” and “Close to You”. These songs gained some traction, each song gaining over 100 million listens. “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” track number 4 on her album The Secret of Us, received popularity very quickly. This song became one of her most famous and well-known songs, gaining millions of listens daily. As of October 2024, “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” has 200 million listens- although that number will most likely continue to expand rapidly. The popularity of this song in particular inspired people to venture into her music even more, thus increasing her popularity. When asked if she knew who Abrams was before her newest album, Tamar Greenberg, a student from CHS replied, “I did not, I only began to know of her recently. I don’t listen to music often, but I do think that her popular songs are good.” Gracie has reached a greater audience with her music- and in only 3 months, The Secret of Us became her most listened-to album.
Gracie Abram’s recent rise to fame didn’t come with universal approval. A couple of students at CHS were asked what they thought of Abrams and her music. Freshman Maya Pisano responded saying, “Her music is really good and she is also my #1 most listened-to artist on Spotify.” It is clear that Abrams has gathered a firm and supportive fanbase, the majority of that fanbase being teenage girls as her music resonates the most with them. However, not everybody shares the same opinion. Another student attending CHS, Isabella Bross says, “I have tried to get into Gracie Abram’s music and listened to her entire discography, but her music is forgettable. She is like every other indie-pop artist, and her music does not stand out to me. I know that a lot of people speak highly of her, but I just do not get it.” While many people connect with Abrams’s music, there are some, like Isabella, who do not, finding that her music lacks distinctiveness that would set her apart from other artists.
Gracie Abrams has spent a while in the music industry but has only recently gained recognition due to her success with the star single from her newest album, “I Love You, I’m Sorry.” This single helped push her into fame that she did not have before despite opening for Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR tour. Even though her rise to fame has been rapid and significant, there are many differing opinions about her. Some find her indistinguishable from other artists from the same genre and some see her as a revolutionary artist who speaks to her listeners with vulnerability. However, despite conflicting opinions about Abrams, her new album and hit songs have allowed her to receive mass recognition. As Gracie and her rising popularity grow, it will be crucial that she carve out an image that sets her apart from other artists. With this new phase for her, it will be pivotal that she continues to find her image to solidify her place in the music industry.
