As freshmen, we can truthfully state that high school is far harder than middle school. Not only is there a heavier workload, stricter rules, higher expectations, but there are also more frequent tests and quizzes. Due to this intense change, we have developed unique studying techniques that fit our needs. We are writing this informational article on study methods and locations to assist others in the way we wish we had gotten.
There are many different studying techniques for different people and classes. Allison Seo, a freshman at Cresskill High School, explains how she studies, “I look over the study guide if one is provided, or I look over my old notes and worksheets.” A poll found that many other Cresskill students also use resources provided by the teacher. This can help practice for subjects like math because it allows you to practice specific questions and familiarize yourself with the processes.
Other students, like Claire Kang, found that using online resources is much more effective. When asked how she normally studies, Claire responded “Make Quizlets to review over words and phrases.” Online studying sites like Quizlet and Kahoot can help students organize their notes and make flashcards all on your device. The organization aspect of these sites can be convenient for those who struggle with organizing notes otherwise.
Another variable for successful studying is if you study with friends or classmates. For some people, studying in groups can be distracting or difficult and they prefer to work alone. For others, studying in groups can be motivating and beneficial, as they can help each other. A poll of Cresskill students found that 53% of respondents preferred studying in groups and 46% preferred studying alone.
The place where you study can significantly impact your test and quiz results, whether the environment is noisy or quiet plays a crucial role. A few Cresskill High School students were asked about their preferred study spots and the reasons behind their choices. Ana Belen Lee, a freshman, was questioned and explained why she enjoys studying at school, “School because I can explain the topics to my friend and that’s my preferred way of studying, teaching others.”
Other students like Victoria Lee a Junior said she enjoyed studying at home. Victoria’s reasoning was something I’m sure we can all relate to enjoying: “I love studying at home because it is comfortable. And I enjoy the silence.”
Lastly, when questioned Hannah Barrs, a freshman at CHS, said her favorite place to study was in cafes such as Cafe RX. The pressure of other people watching what she is doing combined with the movement and white noise around her fulfills her study needs and motivates her to do her best work.
The study environment is crucial, with preferences ranging from the school setting, where students can explain concepts to peers, to the comfort of home or a cafe for a quieter atmosphere.
In the end, the success of your studying relies on you! Everyone has different preferred methods, from flashcards to study guides, and different ideal environments, from home to a cozy cafe. You just have to find the method that works the best for you. Good luck!
