As the wrestling season kicks off, it brings together a group of wrestlers, old and new. Amongst this mix is sophomore Keaira Marshall.
“My experience so far has been great,” detailed Keaira. “Everyone is so helpful and funny. While there have been some questionable moments, overall it’s been amazing. This year I hope to win a decent amount of matches and gain more confidence in the sport.”
Keaira has already established herself as a Cresskill athlete to be reckoned with. She is involved in Varsity Cheerleading where she won an All-American and helped the team place third in the All-Music Division at the West Milford Fall Invitational. She is also a high jumper and 100m runner for Cresskill’s Varsity Track and Field team.
Despite not knowing much about the sport, Keaira’s determination and dedication have her attending daily practices, ready to work and grow as a wrestler. She works closely with Coach Calandrino (more familiarly known as Mr. Cal), learning new techniques and plays in preparation for the upcoming season.
When asked, Cal had nothing but positive things to say about the newest female addition to the team.
“When I heard she was interested in joining the team, I was excited. Girls wrestling has gotten a lot bigger in recent years, and I think Keaira has the potential to be a great wrestler.” He went on to say that while Keaira is expected to face some challenges, being the first and only girl on the team, he and the rest of the guys are ready to help her overcome them.
She has received overwhelming amounts of support from her team members, coach, and the entire Cresskill family. Keaira’s first match will be on December 23, 2024.
