This spring, the trend of wearing dresses over pants has blossomed. Although the style is not for everybody, the trend has caught the eyes of millions of teenagers and young adults worldwide, including Cresskill. The trend has endless possibilities between dress pants, jeans, and leggings under various dresses, encouraging creativity and originality for every person willing to try it out. The beauty behind this trend is that there are a million different ways to do it without ever getting it “wrong.”
This trend is done most commonly with acubi, streetwear, hippie, and business-casual styles, but it depends on what pants you style with your dress. Washed, baggy jeans are more common with acubi and streetwear styles, colorful flared jeans are perfect for hippies, and you can never go wrong with women’s trousers or slacks for business-casual.
In general, straight-leg or flared jeans are the best with dresses unless you are wearing leggings, as they complement the outline of the body the most while blending the dress with the rest of the outfit seamlessly. Skinny jeans are not the fan favorite here as they can lead to a puffy outline and stiff feel when combined with the dress. To complete the naturally layered look, many people opt to wear thin, flowy dresses with lots of flexibility. Poofy, large dresses can disharmonize the already multifaceted look by adding too much power to the top of the body or covering too much of the pants.
As for shoes, you can never go wrong with chunky boots or heels; along with adding color from a chic black to a vibrant pop underneath the pretty layers, they add some height with the pants, keeping you from looking swallowed up in the layers, while keeping the outfit stylish and cute.
If I were to follow this trend, I would lean toward the streetwear aspect. I have many straight-leg jeans, so I would choose my favorite pair of baggy, washed cargo jeans to pair with a flowy jellyfish dress in white. To fit the aesthetic, I would pair this whimsical outfit with plenty of chunky silver jewelry and my black Doc Marten boots. They add 2 inches to my height, adding some space for my jeans and dress to flow down effortlessly.
Now comes the question – how is this trend faring in Cresskill High School? Although it’s been popular on social media and in fashion-central conversations, the trend has not quite caught on in CHS. It is too early to tell if anybody will try it out this year, as the spring weather is still quite chilly. A warmer spring may bring some brave adventurers willing to try this style out.
