Nestled in the heart of Cresskill sits a new Mediterranean restaurant that serves dishes that leave customers eager to return. MaMi, the brand new restaurant that opened this past summer in Farmhouse’s former spot, is the new place for family, friends and special occasions. Inside, sunlight glows across the tables, giving the space a warm, refreshing glow, enticing customers with the smell of herbs from the kitchen. It’s the perfect place to start off (or finish) your day with.
My family and I started off with appetizers such as the Baba Ghanoush and the Roasted Cauliflower, with a pita on the side. The creamy dipping sauce is made out of roasted eggplant, contrasting well with the sweet pomegranate seeds on top. The roasted-till-perfection crispy cauliflower sat on top of silky green tahini with fresh herbs. Both were paired with warm fluffy pita that came straight out of the oven.
For the main course, I went with the Avocado Toast. A thick slice of bread was topped with creamy avocado, sprinkled with salty feta cheese, and sweet roasted tomato. On top of all that sits warm poached egg, waiting for its yolk to spill out over every bite. On the side comes arugula with freshly thin-cut radish. The meal satiates you to the fullest extent, especially while drinking MaMi’s Rimonana, a refreshing pomegranate lemonade topped with fresh mint.
My mom ordered the Shakshuka, a Mediterranean dish filled with a tomato and pepper sauce with eggs baked into it. The dish came out hot and steamy in a round skillet, making our neighbors turn their heads to see where the aroma was coming from. The dish had a good balance of sweet and spice, and the eggs were baked until their yolks mixed into the sauce. The warm challah bread served alongside the dish was perfect for scooping.
Along with the two other dishes, we decided to get the MaMi Breakfast, which comes with freshly cut Israeli salad, two over-easy eggs, dippings such as guacamole and labneh, and a side of golden toast and butter. The salad was bright and tasted fresh, tangy, and crunchy, most likely owing to the diced cucumber, tomato, pepper, and onion combo. The labneh was lemony, and the drizzling of olive oil on top gave its rich taste, along with freshly mashed guacamole, perfect for spreading across the crispy toast.
Along with their delicious food, MaMi offers convenience for all, such as delivering food straight to your door, using GrubHub or DoorDash, so you can enjoy the food in any location you find yourself at. As the owner, Inna Mashiach told me, “MaMi was built for all the families of Cresskill, and its goal is to become the center of town for years to come. ” It’s clear to see that MaMi is quickly becoming Cresskill’s newest go-to spot.
