Album Review: Positions by Ariana Grande

Album Review: Positions by Ariana Grande

Emma Mor, Staff Writer

After months of excited fans waiting to listen and critics ready to judge, Ariana Grande finally released a new album that has not failed to exceed my expectations. With a voice angelic as always that is singing deep and powerful lyrics, this album may be her best yet. The album is classified as trap-pop and mid-tempo R&B, which varies slightly from her basic pop songs.

On October 23, Ariana released a single called “positions,” which brought excitement and anticipation to all of her fans. One of her usual moves is releasing a hit single just days before a new album. On her Instagram page (@arianagrande), she posted a picture to her feed with the caption, “tonight”. There was also a countdown on her story that had the time until the album was released, which was  October 30th. Her Sweetener World Tour finished on December 21st, 2019, and since then, she has not had any performances or released any music until a few days ago when her song  “positions” came out for the public

Some of the incredibly talented people that were featured on the album Ariana were Doja Cat, The Weeknd and Ty Dolla $ign. A collaboration between Doja Cat and Ariana Grande was long overdue and I was so excited to hear her featured on a song.  The song that the two of them worked on together is called “motive,” which perfectly blends their two unique voices together. The Weeknd and Ariana have collaborated together on one of her first albums, and both of their fan bases were eager to hear their new song, “off the table.” There are even conspiracies that say that this song is about how Ariana is trying to find love after the death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller in 2018. On the other hand, this is her first time working with Ty Dolla $ign, and their song “safety net” was nothing short of excellence. Dave Meyers was the director of the music video for the song “positions,” and as a supporter, I can say he definitely did not fail her fans. The music video showed Ariana Grande as the president of the United States. Just like several of her previous songs, he focuses on the issue of sexism and misogyny. Tommy Brown, Ariana’s producer, has been by her side since 2013, and has never doubted her once.

Listed below are some of my personal favorites from the album:

  • positions: I love the catchy lyrics of this song as well as the upbeat tempo and creative music video. I definitely think it is one of Ariana Grande’s best music videos as well.
  • pov: In every album of Ariana’s, there is one song that focuses on her outstanding voice. This is the song in the “positions” album that does so.
  • 34+35: Although this song does have more explicit lyrics, it is definitely a jam and a fan-favorite.
  • six-thirty: The lyrics of this song are so catchy that I can not help but add it to my playlist. At random times in the day I hear myself singing the lyrics without even noticing.
  • love language: When I first heard this song, I was surprised by the background music playing before the lyrics started. It is not Ariana’s usual style, but that does not make it any less amazing.

In conclusion, I definitely recommend listening to this album and watching the music videos. I guarantee you that they will not fall below your expectations and you might even become a fan of Ariana, just like me.
