The 2018-19 Cresskill Girls Varsity Basketball team is expected to build on last year’s successful state championship succeed, winning even more games than last year and another state championship. With a record of 22-9 last year, the pressure is high for the team to find more success with an already impressive season behind them.

Senior captain Sophie Green hopes to “repeat what we did last year and win our state section again and [she also hopes] that we can win the league title because last year we came in second and [she thinks] with pretty much the same team as last year we can definitely achieve both these goals.”

The team lost the league title to their newest rivals, Midland Park, but they were able to get revenge on the team as they beat them for the state title on their court.

Although the team’s starting lineup is a close match to last year’s, they are missing a large offensive force, Julia Maltby. With 188 points on the season, there are large shoes to fill, but junior Elley Wells is eager to step up to the challenge. Wells is “prepared because last year [she] got a decent amount of playing time being the first one off the bench so [she’s] confident… [She hopes] to shoot more this year and work on [her] left hand to get better on the offensive because [she is] better on the defensive end.”

Being lead by Coach Michael McCourt and captains Courtney Madison, Sophie Green, and Jennifer Garcia, this highly anticipated season tips off on December 14th against Park Ridge.
