In recent years, the importance of mental health has gained significant attention, prompting schools to reevaluate their policies to better support students’ well-being. One possibility  is the implementation of a free stress-related absence policy, allowing students to take a break when feeling overwhelmed.  

As students work through demanding school work and extracurriculars, the pressure to excel in both can take a toll on  students’ mental health. Acknowledging the increasing prevalence of stress-related issues among students, several schools have already adopted policies that recognize mental health as a valid reason for absence. Schools such as Bergen Tech have had success implementing this new policy as students, especially freshmen and sophomores, who were not used to the new workload have taken advantage of an extra day to study or just take the day off. Students have 1 stress-related excused absence per marking period, students may email or call the school similar to any other excused absence however a parent does not need to comply for this. Students may personally contact the school.   Implementing this free stress-related absence policy at Cresskill High School could foster a more supportive and understanding environment as well. It sends a message to students that their mental well-being is a top priority and that it matters. By allowing students the flexibility to take a step back when needed, CHS can contribute to a culture that values and promotes mental health.

However some might say there may be some issues with the new proposed idea. School Psychologist Cristina Campos believes it is a positive step towards recognizing the impact of stress on students and their academic performance, but acknowledges some issues. Ms. Campos mentioned “I am concerned about the potential for abuse and the burden it may place on staff members and students to verify claims of stress.” Therefore, assessing whether a student is truly stressed or faking can be a gray area, nonetheless it is better to have the option for students to rest when some are truly stressed. 

Mental health for the majority of history has been neglected and treated less than physical well being. However, a shift in perspective by implementing the stress excused absence can encourage students to be more open about their struggles and seek help when needed. Ms. Campos agrees saying ”Building a healthy and productive school community requires giving mental health and stress management top priority. Students are better able to concentrate on their academic and personal objectives when they feel empowered and supported to manage their stress.”

In all, I believe teaching both students and faculty the significance of mental wellbeing and how to recognize signs of trouble is significant for the policy’s success. By recognizing the importance of mental wellbeing in coherence with physical well being will provide CHS with a healthy and supportive learning environment that will benefit all students’ mental health.
