Coronavirus: What to do While Self-Quarantined

Jolie Zenna and Cayla Newman

So, we’re quarantined. The rumors had been spreading for weeks and although we never thought it would actually happen, here we are—stuck in our homes and bored out of our minds. We can’t play sports, can’t go to work, can barely even go shopping. The Google Classroom assignments are piling up, and it seems like there are only three things to do: sleep, eat, and work.

But no need to fret—so you don’t go completely crazy, here are some productive things you can do at home that aren’t just sitting around.

Organize your room: Spring is just around the corner, and with that comes spring cleaning—eagerly anticipated by some and dreaded by others. With so much time on your hands, you have no excuse to procrastinate. Believe it or not, there are probably a ton of things in your room you don’t even know you have! Throw away the dance costume from your third grade recital that has been collecting dust in the back of your closet for eight years. Empty out your closet and drawers completely, not only to discard or donate things, but also to create a system of organization so that things are easy to find. Since we are spending so much time in our houses, it will be easy for mess to build up. Reorganize your room so that it is easy to keep things neat. Shake things up and move furniture around. You can create a whole new aesthetic for yourself that will make you never want to leave your new, cool room (well, maybe after a month of being stuck in it you’ll want to). Your room should be a safe space for you for the next few weeks, so throw out the pizza boxes stacked up under your bed and please, pick up your laundry so you can actually see the floor. You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.

Try a fun recipe: With restaurants closing and people stocking up on groceries, you have many adventurous

recipes to test! Even if you are not much of a chef, there are thousands of tutorials online to help you cook a delicious and easy meal for you and your family that will leave scrumptious smells wafting through your home. Surprise your family with breakfast in the morning, or impress them with a full course meal (they don’t have to know you looked up the recipe). Spoonful and SimplyRecipes are some great cooking websites to check out. Better yet, you can bake delicious treats for dessert that will bring you some happiness and stress relief during this maddening time. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next Rachael Ray by the end of the quarantine!

Watch a new show: After you finish your online school day, you are most likely going to want to entertain yourself. Lucky for you, Netflix just added a bunch of new movies and series to its stream. In the mood for a chick flick? “She’s Just Not That Into You” was just added in March. Or maybe you want a documentary that glues your eyes to the screen, like the recent Taylor Swift documentary or a chilling murder mystery. A lot of us will probably agree that what’s most on-demand right now is a good laugh. Satisfy this craving with the many Netflix comedy specials from Adam Sandler, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin James, and many more. You will become a binge-watching expert in the next few weeks.

Vlog your day: Given that this is the first time that schools have shut down nationwide and moved to virtual platforms, don’t forget that you are part of history in the making! To make your time in quarantine more interesting and fulfilling, start a daily vlog in which you record how each day in quarantine goes. You can keep these to yourself as a documentation of this era of your life, or even post them on a social media platform and share what you are doing with others. Tons of influencers gain a following just by recording their everyday lives. You have a leg up since you are documenting such an unprecedented time. Even if your vlogs just consist of you completing your online school or talking about your day-to-day experiences, for all you know, you might just have the potential to become a famous social media influencer.

Go on Duolingo and learn a new language: Duolingo may not teach you everything, but you can learn a bit of that language you’ve always wanted to learn but never quite got around to. Maybe take up Mandarin, Arabic, or Hindi—you have the time, so why not?

Actually work out: This is the time to start back up on those New Year’s Resolutions you forgot about! You don’t need a gym to work out, just a phone and a bit of space. Look up workout videos and you will find a lot of really good ones!

Take up a new hobby: Go on YouTube and literally look up anything you want to try. Want to learn how to sew, cook, or knit a scarf? This is the best time to do it!

Read a book for pleasure: It’s hard to read books that we want to read, because we are always busy with books for school. Now that you have time, find a comfy place and a good book, and just read.

Catch up on sleep: Obviously don’t sleep till noon everyday, but right now you don’t have to wake up at 6:00 every morning. Go to bed earlier, and try to get around 8-9 hours of sleep. It will make a big difference.

Teach your pet a new trick: If you have a dog, ‘play dead’ is highly recommended. If you have a cat, you might want to skip this one.

Do your hair or makeup in a way you’ve always wanted to try: No one is going to see you, so just do whatever you want! You have the time to mess up, fix it, and just have fun trying new things.

Play board games: This isn’t for everyone, but try your hand at a traditional board game, and you might just develop a serious obsession—not just with Monopoly, which is the only game people ever think to play. Play Life, Pandemic, Family Feud, or Clue. They are all really fun, and will pass the time faster.

Now that you have the time, give these activities a try. There are so many fun and productive ways to get yourself through the quarantine. Whether it be cooking, cleaning, or binge watching you do not have to so it alone either. Coordinate a group FaceTime with your friends, or spend some more time with your family (but not too much—you don’t want to claw out each others’ throats).

We will all get through this weird time in our own ways, and we will come out even better.
